A flash flood watch is in effect from 1 p.m. today until Tuesday morning, according to the National Weather Service.
Brazoria, Chambers. Galveston, Fort Bend, Liberty and Harris counties are all included under the watch.
Thunderstorms might start along the coast this morning and then develop between the coast and Interstate 10 this afternoon, meteorologists said. Later, more thunderstorms could occur overnight.
Rainfall rates are expected to be high, and flash flooding could occur in areas where the rates remain high for longer periods of time.
Southwest Texas had a rainy week last week, and on Sunday, rainfall rates were 2 inches an hour, according to the weather service.
GROWING STRONGER: Florence intensifies as it nears US Southeast
Street flooding is expected in low lying and poor drainage areas. Water should stay within the banks of bayous unless high rain rates last longer than two to three hours, meteorologists said.
The rain is expected to last through at least Friday.
And tropical activity is beginning to take shape in the Atlantic as hurricane season continues.
A storm system is also moving into the Gulf of Mexico this week. The tropical wave has low chances of developing into a tropical storm, however, meteorologists said.
But three hurricanes are already churning in the Atlantic – Florence, Helene and Isaac.
Florence is expected to hit the east coast of the United States sometime Friday. Helene is tracking northwest before it’s expected to take a sharp turn north in the Atlantic and Isaac should move west into the Caribbean this weekend, according to the National Hurricane Center.
