CAROLINA BEACH, NC (WECT) –

The Carolina Beach Fishing Pier appears to have been significantly damaged as Hurricane Florence slammed the New Hanover County shoreline throughout Friday.

Some of the pier’s broken pillars could be seen jetting out from the ocean water as the rough waves continued to hammer the Pleasure Island landmark.

The pier was initially built in 1946 and subsequently rebuilt after being destroyed by Hurricane Hazel in 1954.
