WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) –

The Wilmington Police Department has released the identity of a mother who, along with her infant child, was killed after a tree crashed into her home during Hurricane Florence.

Lesha Patrice Johnson, 41, and her eight-month-old child died after a large tree fell onto their home on Mercer Avenue around 9:30 a.m. Friday trapping them inside.

Johnson’s husband, 48-year-old Adam Zachery Johnson, was injured in the accident and was taken to New Hanover Regional Medical Center for treatment. He remains hospitalized in fair condition.

Crews conducted an intense rescue effort to try and save their lives.

Wilmington police say Johnson and her child were the first known fatalities associated with Florence.
