LELAND, NC (WECT) –

Golfers teed it up at Compass Pointe Golf Club in Leland Wednesday for a good cause.

Compass Pointe held a tournament to raise money for those affected by Hurricane Florence.

Club members came up with the idea after cleaning up storm debris from the front nine holes.

“We asked ‘What we can do?’” said Compass Pointe resident Herman Ratcliffe. “Everyone said ‘Let’s do a donation, let’s do a GoFund. Let’s do something to help.’”

Over 100 golfers each gave a donation to play in the nine-hole tournament.

“The one nice thing is that it did bring people closer,” said Jay Biggs, president and COO of Renaissance Golf Group. “We would have a couple hundred people coming up to the clubhouse hanging out and enjoying each other’s company through the tough parts of the storm.”

The total amount of money raised isn’t known yet, but Biggs believes it’s between $6,000-10,000. Once the dollar amount is finalized the club’s board of directors will select a charity to donate the proceeds to.
