WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) –
WECT will host a telethon Thursday to benefit disaster relief efforts from Hurricane Florence.
All of the money raised Thursday will go to the American Red Cross and 91 percent of the money given to the Red Cross will be used to help victims of Hurricane Florence.
“Financial donations raised in the WECT #CapeFearStong Fund Drive for Hurricane Florence will help people affected by this devastating storm,” said James Jarvis, executive director of American Red Cross of the Cape Fear Area. “Donations are used to prepare for, respond to and help people recover from this disaster. This includes providing food, shelter, relief supplies, emotional support, recovery planning and other assistance as well as supporting the vehicles, warehouses, technology and people that make that help possible.
“The American Red Cross honors donor intent. Donations raised for Hurricane Florence relief will be used to help families devastated by that storm.”
The WECT telethon will start Thursday at 6 a.m.and continue until 8 p.m. People interested in donating can call 910-386-5540 during those hours and make their pledges.
Anyone interested in making a donation now can do so by clicking here.
Here’s a breakdown of what donations can provide:

$20 – Provides a blanket, meal, snack and comfort kit to a person. Blankets, stored and ready for distribution nationwide, are typically given to people in pairs for padding their cot in shelters and covering themselves while sleeping. The meals and snacks are provided by Red Cross workers and distributed at shelters or through mobile feeding in communities by Red Cross emergency response vehicles. Comfort kits, stored and ready for distribution nationwide, contain the basic personal supplies someone would need in the aftermath of a disaster. Kits contain deodorant, toothbrush, toothpaste, facial tissues, wash cloth, shampoo, liquid soap, lotion, comb, razor and shaving cream.
