Fort Bend County escapes with minor flooding after heavy rainfall

RICHMOND, Texas — Most residents in Fort Bend County are breathing a sigh of relief on Friday after storms only brought minor flooding to some areas.

Fort Bend County Judge KP George said some areas got up to five inches of rain.

The threat is not over as more rain is in the forecast.

George said there were only a handful of water rescues.

Also, the county is waiting for a final tally to figure out exactly how many homes have been damaged over the last few days.

George said cities manage emergencies independently with help from the county as needed.

County officials are keeping a close eye on river levels.

The Brazos River in Richmond has gone up a foot in the last 24 hours.

Jeff Janecek with the county’s drainage district doesn’t believe the river will go up much more in that area.

The Brazos near Rosharon reached a major flood stage but it’s not expected to go up more either.

However, the San Bernard River is expected to rise another eight feet in some areas.

Janecek said residents should be on high alert.

“The river’s rising about one foot every two hours specifically down in that area,” Janecek said. “We have a community called Tierra Grande and we’re communicating with the residents down there and in the lower end of the county near Needville making sure they’re aware of the conditions to come.”

There are no evacuation orders in place for those areas.

They’re urging residents not to let their guard down until the threat is over.

Anyone needing help is urged to call 211.
