A tropical depression expected to form in the Gulf by late Thursday may not land in Texas, but many travelers in the state might feel the impact of the storm.

Much is still uncertain about the system’s development, but the current forecast shows it likely making landfall along the Louisiana-Texas border sometime Saturday, the National Weather Service said.

Regardless, beach or fishing plans might have to be postponed. The system could produce storm surges and hurricane-force winds across along the Louisiana coast and the upper Texas coast, according to the National Hurricane Center. It has the potential to drop heavy rainfall from the upper Texas coast all the way to the Florida Panhandle.

Meteorologists with the National Weather Service say the risks around Galveston include higher winds and seas, swells for long periods, a high rip current and coastal flooding.

Officials with Royal Caribbean International have also been keeping an eye on the development. James Van Fleet, the company’s chief meteorologist, said Wednesday morning that at least two cruise ships would be safe to leave Galveston if the storm hits in southern Louisiana: Enchantment of the Seas (leaving Friday) and Liberty of the Seas (leaving Sunday).

It’s unclear how the storms may have impacted other cruises sailing from Galveston or Louisiana. This story will be updated as more information becomes available.
