South Texas communities will mark second anniversary of Hurricane Harvey at these events

Hurricane Harvey roared into the Coastal Bend on Aug. 25, 2017, devastating communities along the South Texas coast.

The Category 4 storm packed winds up to 152 mph and a storm surge between five to 12 feet. Among the hardest hit were cities like Rockport/Fulton in Aransas County and Port Aransas in Nueces County.

This weekend several events are planned to mark the second anniversary of the storm and reflect on the recovery efforts made in the last two years.

SATURDAY, AUG. 24

St. Peter Episcopal Church hosts a First Responders Breakfast from 7:30-10:30 a.m. Saturday at 555 Enterprise Blvd., Rockport. The church is commemorating the second anniversary of Hurricane Harvey by offering breakfast to first responders, available as carryout or a sit down meal. Contact 361-729-2649 for information. 

Camp Aranzazu will host a Camp Care Day beginning at 8 a.m. Saturday at 5420 Loop 1781, Rockport. Volunteers perform light-duty maintenance and landscaping projects to help maintain the camp for children and adults with special needs and chronic illnesses. Lunch will be provided. A Harvey Encore 5K Fun Run begins at 8 a.m. Saturday at Daily Grind, 302 S Austin St., Rockport. This free walk/run will go to Rockport Beach and back. Register at http://bit.ly/HarveyFunRun.

The Town of Fulton will host a groundbreaking ceremony for the new Fulton Fishing Pier at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Fulton Harbor Park, 402 N. Fulton Beach Road.

The Harvey Encore Block Party from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. in downtown Rockport along Austin St. This free event will feature vendors, food trucks, non-profits, and children’s activities. Kids Alley opens at 5 p.m. and live music goes all day with performances by Dean Adamson (12-2 p.m.), Double Shot Down (2-4 p.m.) and Viral Rock (6-10 p.m.). Rockport Hands of Hope present an open house and building dedication from 1-4 p.m. Saturday at First Baptist Church, 1515 N. Live Oak St., Rockport. The dedication begins at 2 p.m. and the entire community is invited. Case managers will also be on site doing assessments, so there is still time to apply for disaster relief. The City of Port Aransas Parks and Recreation Department presents Celebrate Port Aransas Strong with a tree dedication and concert Saturday at Patsy Jones Amphitheater in Roberts Point Park, 301 JC Barr Blvd., Port Aransas. The tree dedication begins at 5:45 p.m. and concert by Mikala Griffin at 6 p.m. A young Texas songwriter, Griffin’s music incorporates elements of pop, rock, folk and country.
