— The rain and winds of Hurricane Dorian were slowly leaving the upper half of the Outer Banks. The storm left a lot of damage and sound-side flooding, too.

The Avalon Pier in Kill Devil Hills lost the last 50-60 feet. The Nags Head Pier was also washed out. Angela Mann, a local resident, called the loss of part of Avalon Pier “heart-wrenching.”

“The locals have tried so hard to keep this pier together,” Mann said. “We have built this berm since [Hurricane] Matthew came through, and we’re proud that it stood, and we thought maybe the pier would be here.”

The Dare County Sheriff’s Office and the Highway Patrol closed US Hwy. 64 going into Dare County due to the sound-side flooding and the damage from Dorian. Law enforcement were posted near the entrances, around Mann’s Harbor, to turn people away.

Streets along the Roanoke Sound in Nags Head were flooded, but homes in the area are elevated and have escaped damage. Winds from Hurricane Dorian continued to blow from the northwest, pushing water in the sounds back into the Outer Banks. There was a lot of flooding in places like Kitty Hawks, too, but nothing residents said they haven’t seen before.

In Southern Shores, there was some flooding but the biggest thing was some downed trees, limbs and lots of other debris. There didn’t seem to be a lot of structural damage to homes.
