Tornado, Flash Flood Warnings Issued in the San Antonio Area

More than 40,000 CPS Energy customers lost power Sunday night as high winds from a line of heavy thunderstorms ripped through the San Antonio area.

“We have multiple crews on standby & anxiously waiting to serve you,” CPS Energy tweeted Sunday night. “Please stay safe!”

Damage reports began to trickle in late Sunday, including downed tree limbs and shingles blown off roofs.

The CPS Energy outage map showed that more than 200 outages affected 42,413 customers at 9:45 p.m. Sunday, most of which were in northern and western Bexar County.

The National Weather Service issued a flash flood warning for most of Bexar County Sunday night, set to expire at 12:15 a.m. Monday. 

Previously, the weather service issued a tornado warning at 8 p.m., tweeting at 8:11 p.m.: “We are watching rotation on a tornado warned cell headed towards the Helotes area. If you are in NW Bexar County take shelter NOW.”

Forecasters reported straight-line winds of up to 70 mph during the height of the storm.

The last tornado warning in Bexar County expired around 9 p.m., but the National Weather Service warned that additional warnings were possible.
