Tropical Storm Cristobal is forecast to move north across the Gulf of Mexico this week, the National Hurricane Center said.

The storm is expected to bring heavy rain to portions of southern Mexico.

On Monday, the storm was classified as a disturbance. It developed into a depression on Tuesday and a Tropical Storm by Tuesday afternoon.

“Tropical storm conditions are expected along the coast of Mexico where a tropical storm warning is in effect,” the center said in a news release.

The storm has maximum sustained winds of 40 mph and is moving southwest at 3 mph, according to the center. Some strengthening is possible during the next day, the center said.

It is too early to indicate a location and timing of any impacts to the U.S. Gulf Coast.

The National Hurricane Center urges people along the coast to monitor the progress of the system through the week and ensure a hurricane plan is in place.

Storms continue in Coastal Bend

The Coastal Bend on Monday experienced flooding from recent rainfall throughout the weekend.

Isolated to scattered thunderstorms were expected to continue Tuesday through mid-week, according to the National Weather Service.

Coastal flooding along beaches are possible Wednesday and Thursday.

A flood warning remained in effect Tuesday.

The Oso Creek’s flood state is at 20 feet. As of Tuesday morning, the creek was a 24 feet. The creek will continue to rise, the National Weather Service said.

“Kings crossing Golf Course is at least (half) flooded. Water is within 3 feet of some homes,” the weather service said in an advisory. “Water flows across Oso Parkway Road at (two) low areas in the extreme south portion of the Lakes Sudivision.”

Preparing for a hurricane during COVID-19

  • Give yourself more time to prepare emergency food, water and medicine supplies. Home delivery is the safest choice for buying supplies.
  • Protect yourself and others when filing prescriptions by limiting in-person visits. Use mail order delivery, drive-through or curbside pickup if you can.
  • Pay attention to local guidance about evacuations and shelters.
  • If you need to evacuate, prepare a “go kit” with personal items you can’t do without during the emergency. Include hand sanitizer, bar or liquid soap and two cloth face coverings.
  • Follow social distance guidelines and keep at least 6 feet away from people.
