Galveston residents are being told to leave now as eastern Texas prepares for a strengthened Hurricane Laura to make landfall in the coming days.

According to a release from the city of Galveston, residents are instructed to secure any loose belongings and leave the island with all family members and pets Tuesday.

City services will be suspended and all buildings closed at 12 p.m. CT.

Laura is expected to make landfall as a Category 3 or stronger hurricane early Thursday morning near the Texas-Louisiana border, according to the National Hurricane Center’s latest storm update.

According to the city’s announcement, police and fire will be unavailable when winds reach Tropical Storm strength.
