Here's how to prepare your pets ahead of Hurricane Laura

Are your pets prepared to ride out the storm? Here’s what to prep for them in advance.

As Hurricane Laura intensifies and is expected to make landfall along the Gulf Coast as a major hurricane by Wednesday night, now is the time to not only get your storm kits ready, but your pet’s as well.

EMERGENCY ALERT NUMBERS TO HAVE: As Hurricane Laura approaches, here are the emergency alerts, numbers you should have 

The Houston SPCA and the CDC both have information on how to get your pet disaster preparedness kit ready.

The following are items to starting preparing in advance of the storm:

Documents:

  • Vaccination records 
  • Registration information (proof of ownership or adoption records)
  • A recent photograph of each of your pets
  • Pet description(s) (breed, sex, color, weight)
  • Microchip information
  • Your contact information or that of the person caring for you pets
  • Veterinary clinic contact information
  • Waterproof container to keep all documents

Daily care items:

  • Two week supply of food and water for each pet
  • One month supply of any medications your pets need with a list of instructions
  • Non-spill food and water dishes
  • Cat litter pan and litter, or plastic poop bags
  • Newspaper/puppy pads
  • Manuel can opener
  • Feeding instruction for each pet

Other supplies:

  • Grooming supplies
  • Crate or carrier to transport your pet (if needed)
  • Extra collars with ID tags and leashes
  • Sheets and blankets
  • Toys
  • Pet first aid kit
  • Cleaning supplies for accidents ( paper towels, wipes, disinfectant)

During the storm your pets may also be nervous, so keeping their favorite toys and blankets nearby can help, as well as reaching out to your  veterinarian for other tips.

Be sure to bring all pets inside during the storm, and if you have to evacuate, make sure to take your furry friends with you!
