Nicholas strengthens to a hurricane just before landfall Monday night.

Hurricane Nicholas is forecast to make landfall near Brazosport, TX as a category 1 hurricane Monday night/early Tuesday morning.

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — MON 10PM – Nicholas is now a Category 1 hurricane, sitting 20 miles off from the middle Texas Gulf Coast.  75 mph winds; 90 mph gusts.  Movement is NNE at 10 mph.

Nicholas is forecast to move ashore near, or west of Brazosport tonight as a category 1 hurricane.  From there, Nicholas weakens and slows it’s forward movement over SE TX and the SE US through Thursday. 6-12″ of rain possible in those locations through Thursday.

In the Coastal Bend, improving weather/beach conditions overnight.  Tuesday looks like a nice day of weather with highs in the low 90s, slightly less humidity, and a west to northwest 10-20 mph breeze.

Winds will be out of the north, around the west side of Nicholas.  That may push water into the bay side of barrier islands and some of the canals on the Island.

A few showers will wrap around the western side of Nicholas, through the Coastal Bend between now and midnight.  Accumulations will be minimal.  Rain chances taper down after midnight.
