Line of storms brings tornadoes to North Texas, causing damage

A line of storms moving across North Texas spawned at least two confirmed tornadoes early Tuesday morning, December 13, according to reports from several Dallas-Fort Worth area outlets. Much of North Texas is currently under a tornado watch through 11 a.m. on Tuesday. Here’s what we know that has occurred so far

At least three tornadoes have been seen along the front edge of the storms as they approach the Metroplex on Tuesday morning, according to WFAA. A tornado has been confirmed in the River Oaks area in Tarrant County. It’s reported to be moving east at 30 mph.

At around 6 a.m., another tornado was confirmed between Eastland and Erath counties. It was reported southeast of Ranger and moving northeast at about 40 mph, according to WFAA. An additional possible tornado was observed near Brock in Parker County, where the storm also included pea-sized hail. 

Where is the tornado warning in Texas?

Tornado Warnings have been issued for parts of Grayson County, Cooke County, Hood County, and Erath County, according to NBCDFW. The risk of severe storms will move east throughout the day, with more tornadoes possible in the afternoon and evening in eastern Texas, Louisiana, and Mississippi. The National Weather Service advised residents to take cover, get to the lowest interior floor of a building, and avoid windows.

NWS also issued a Tornado Watch for Archer, Brown, Clay, Collin, Comanche, Cooke, Dallas, Denton, Eastland, Ellis, Erath, Fannin, Grayson, Hood, Hunt, Jack, Johnson, Kaufman, Montague, Palo Pinto, Parker, Rockwall, Somervell, Stephens, Tarrant, Wise, and Young Counties. The Tornado Watch will last until 11 a.m.

Severe Thunderstorm Warnings have also been issued for parts of Dallas County, Tarrant County, Parker County, Hood County, and Johnson County.

Tornado damage?

Tornado damage has been reported in parts of Palo Pinto County and Jack County where emergency responders have been dispatched to help with downed power lines and damaged barns, according to NBCDFW.

Damage was also reported near FM 730 and FM 2264 near Decatur, and a semi-truck was overturned on U.S. 287 in Decatur, according to WFAA.

The Dallas-Fort Worth Airport has cleared its “Shelter in Place” as of 9:05 a.m.

Is it tornado season?

According to a report from KXAN, tornadoes in Texas are most common during the spring severe weather season. The New York Times reported that the storms are part of a weather system that is bringing significant, widespread hazards across the central United States.

The risk of severe storms will move east throughout the day, with more tornadoes possible in the afternoon and evening in eastern Texas, Louisiana and Mississippi.
