AUSTIN, Texas — The risk for strong storms across parts of Central Texas is on the rise as we close out the workweek and enter into the weekend.

Friday morning begins with widespread low clouds and fog. Visibility in many spots will be under a half mile. There could also be patchy drizzle or mist. Make sure to take it easy on the roads! Temperatures will be fairly mild in the 50s to start the day.

Through the day Friday, the sky will remain mostly cloudy and there could be a few scattered showers or downpours through the afternoon as highs warm into the upper 60s and low 70s. There will not be any heavy storms during the day.

The heavy rain threat and storm chance will begin Friday evening around 7 p.m. as storms develop initially across the Hill Country. This activity will become a broken line of storms that rolls into the Austin metro, and then area east of I-35 through the late evening and early overnight. There could be multiple rounds of rain and storms overnight. By early Saturday morning, all of the rain will move out of Central Texas, and the rest of the weekend will be dry.

A few storms Friday evening and Friday night could be strong to severe. The Storm Prediction Center increased the risk for severe weather along and west of the I-35 corridor to a “slight” – level 2 out of 5 – risk. The main threats will be large hail and strong winds, but there is a very low chance for an isolated tornado. In addition to the severe weather threat, there could be pockets of locally heavy rain and minor flooding.

The weekend forecast is looking dry and breezy with highs in the lower 70s on Saturday and upper 60s on Sunday. Windy conditions are expected on Sunday with gusts around 35 mph possible.
