Tropical Storm Olga forms in the Gulf of Mexico

HOUSTON — The National Hurricane Center says a tropical system in the Gulf of Mexico has now become Tropical Storm Olga. The storm, now with sustained winds at 40 MPH, is expected to weaken by the time it makes landfall. 

As of Friday afternoon, the forecast cone projects Olga will make landfall along the central Louisiana coast, bring the threat of heavy rain to the state over the weekend. No coastal warnings have been issued.

The storm is expected to collide with the cold front that brought flooding rain to Austin on Thursday night, and cooler temperatures to Houston on Friday.

Olga isn’t expected to impact the Houston area but could bring as much as eight inches of rain to parts of Louisiana and Mississippi by early next week.
