Thunderstorms expected throughout the week as Hurricane season officially begins

After a Memorial Day filled with sunshine, the Coastal Bend was hit with rainfall and thunderstorms early Tuesday morning. 

According to the National Weather Service, showers and thunderstorms are expected to continue throughout Tuesday and into the evening. 

The NWS has issued a small craft advisory to the Coastal Bend, warning of choppy bays and southeast winds up to 30 knots. 

Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi was open Tuesday, but has warned students and visitors to use caution on the roadways. 

The NWS expects numerous showers and thunderstorms to continue throughout the week and into the weekend.

High temperatures are expected to be around 80 to 95 degrees, with lows around 70 to 75 degrees across South Texas. 

Hurricane season

Although the Coastal Bend has had to keep an eye on a tropical disturbance already this year, Tuesday marks the official start of the 2021 hurricane season in South Texas. 

The National Hurricane Center recently updated the seasonal averages to 14 named storms, seven hurricanes and three major hurricanes. 

Formed in May, Tropical Storm Ana was the first names storm of the season. The next named storm will be Bill.
