Panel recommends new rules for prescribed burns after Bastrop wildfire
In late January, a prescribed burn by the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department near Bastrop got out of control, and burned more than 800 acres.
The wildfire led to more than 250 evacuations, but ultimately didn’t harm any people or structures. Still, afterward, an independent panel made up of prescribed burn experts from other states investigated what caused the fire, and how to prevent it from happening again.
Rodney Franklin, director of the state parks division of the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department, spoke to Texas Standard about the fire, and some of the panel’s recommendations.
