A widespread round of strong to severe storms is expected on Friday, prompting another Weather Impact Alert Day.

AUSTIN, Texas — Thursday afternoon and evening brought active weather to the KVUE area, including a confirmed tornado in northern Burnet County and numerous reports of very large hail—some stones exceeding 2 inches in diameter.

While storms that developed were quite intense, they were scattered, and not all of the KVUE area experienced them. Strong to severe storms will remain possible through the late evening, but a general weakening trend is expected. By around midnight, most of the activity should wind down, and no additional severe weather is anticipated overnight.

However, attention now turns to Friday, which brings a higher risk for severe weather. Unlike the spotty activity over the past couple of days, storms on Friday are expected to be much more widespread. Rain and storm chances are high—around 80 to 90 percent—for much of the KVUE area.

Because of this, the KVUE Weather Team has issued another Weather Impact Alert Day for Friday. The Storm Prediction Center places most of our area under a level 2 out of 5 severe weather risk. Large hail will once again be the primary concern, but strong winds and an isolated tornado cannot be ruled out.

Friday won’t be a washout from start to finish. Much of the day will likely stay dry, but we urge everyone to be weather-aware from 4 p.m. through about midnight, when a more organized line of storms is expected to move through the region.

In addition to the severe threat, flooding will also become a concern. Rainfall totals could range from a half inch to more than 3 inches, which sets the stage for a localized flood risk especially in spots that have already seen recent heavy rain.

The Weather Prediction Center has placed the entire KVUE area under a level 2 out of 4 risk for excessive rainfall.

Storms should exit quickly late Friday night, with most of the activity gone by 1 or 2 a.m., if not sooner. The weekend will trend cooler and quieter, with no additional severe weather expected.

The KVUE Weather Team will continue to monitor the forecast closely.
