Weather Impact Alert: Hot and humid with a risk of severe weather on Thursday

Strong-to-severe storms capable of producing small hail and damaging winds are popping up across the Carolinas.
CHARLOTTE, N.C. â The WCNC Charlotte Weather Impact Team issued a Weather Alert this week due to the threat of extreme heat and severe storms.
Widespread severe thunderstorm warnings popped up across the Charlotte area on Wednesday and there could be another round of strong-to-severe storms on Thursday afternoon. As of 1 p.m., storms developed in the mountains with heavy rain and gusty winds up to 45 mph.
Another heat advisory will be in place Thursday afternoon between 2 p.m. and 8 p.m., meaning the heat index could make it feel up to 105 degrees.
When
The last day for the heat and humidity risk is Thursday between 2 p.m. and 8 p.m. Watch for isolated strong storms, too, but the storms from Wednesday are helping stabilize the atmosphere and lowering our risk!

Impacts
The feels-like temperatures will be between 103 and 105 degrees Thursday. This could cause people to get heat cramps, heat exhaustion and even raise the threat for heatstroke. Heat is the deadliest weather-related event.
Meteorologist Majestic Storm says the Charlotte area is under a medium risk for severe storms. The primary risks with these storms will include damaging winds, hail and heavy rain.

Need to stay safe
It’s imperative to stay hydrated, even if you aren’t spending much time outdoors, and to wear sunscreen if you’re in the sun. But the WCNC Weather Impact Team strongly recommends you stay cool and out of the heat if you can avoid it.
Heat indices will slowly drop throughout the week, becoming more normal for summertime standards by this weekend.
Are any alerts in place for the heat?
All of the Charlotte area, with the exception of the mountains, was under a heat advisory Wednesday. Criteria for this alert is 105 degrees or higher for the feels-like temperatures.
