Columbus County residents hold meeting to discuss flooding issues
WHITEVILLE, NC (WWAY) — More than 2 dozen people gathered in Whiteville Thursday evening to discuss an issue of concern to many residents: flooding.
The Columbus County NAACP held the meeting at St. Mark’s AME Zion Church on Virgil Street.
The North Carolina Conservation Network and Southern Coalition for Social Justice presented ways to help deal with flooding in the area.
Attendees who live in Whiteville, Bolton, and Tabor City shared their concerns with flooding, which some residents said happens even after routine storms.
Phyllis Demery appreciates having opportunities like this to speak up.
“I’m hoping it will help. And you got to speak up, if you don’t speak up for yourself, nobody gonna speak up for you,” Demery said. “You know what I’m saying. Those that not complaining, the ones who don’t have no problems.”
Several officials attended the meeting, including Whiteville’s Mayor and City Manager, as well as an elected official from Bolton.
