Voluntary evacuation issued along NC Highway 690 as Tropical Storm Debby causes rising water levels

A voluntary evacuation is underway Thursday afternoon in several communities along North Carolina Highway 690 due to increasing water levels.
According to the Moore County Sheriff’s Office, rising water levels from Tropical Storm Debby are impacting the area, starting at the McGill Road intersection and extending east toward the Cumberland County Line near Fort Liberty.
Affected communities include Riverview and Riverbend, near the Little River and Crains Creek water sources, according to the sheriff’s office.
They also say the Wood Lake Dam is experiencing erosion of the spillway area, which could cause the temporary dam to fail.
A shelter for residents is available at Moore County Hillcrest Park in Carthage.
