NC couple rescued from Grand Canyon flooding

The Arizona National Guard rescued more than 100 people after severe flooding destroyed parts of Havasupai Creek in Arizona, including a North Carolina family.

A couple from Raleigh was hiking last week at an Indian reservation in Arizona when torrential rains triggered massive flooding. They had quite an ordeal as they finally made it to safety.

Heavy rains triggered massive flooding at the Havasupai Indian reservation last week. Shruti Chopra, 34, and her husband knew rain was in the forecast but did not know it would lead to flash flooding.

Chopra told CNN they first ducked into a cove to avoid getting wet. Moments later, a Native American on a horse yelled out to them to get to higher ground.

Chopra, her husband and a family of four crossed rivers, formed human chains and walked through thorny bushes and cacti. Once they reached a village, other hikers who escaped the floodwaters greeted them.

Eventually the National Guard evacuated the Chopras and the other hikers on Saturday morning.

Officials say they’ll be working with federal and state emergency management systems to evaluate and assess the damage and put a plan in place to start repairing the campground and trails.
