North Carolina extends FEMA aid deadline for Hurricane Helene victims

NORTH CAROLINA, USA — North Carolinians affected by Hurricane Helene now have until Feb. 6, 2025, to apply for federal disaster assistance, the NC Department of Public Safety announced.
The extension covers 39 counties and the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians. Eligible residents must have uninsured losses from the storm.
FEMA has encouraged those with insurance to file claims first before applying for FEMA aid. But, you don’t need to wait for an insurance settlement to apply.
The deadline extension also applies to Disaster Unemployment Assistance (DUA), available through March 29, 2025, for those who lost work due to Helene. Claims can be filed by clicking here or by calling 888-737-0258.
The U.S. Small Business Administration has also extended its deadline for low-interest disaster loans. These loans help businesses, nonprofits, homeowners and renters rebuild damaged property.
Counties eligible for assistance include Alexander, Alleghany, Ashe, Avery, Buncombe, Burke, Cabarrus, Caldwell, Catawba, Cherokee, Clay, Cleveland, Forsyth, Gaston, Graham, Haywood, Henderson, Iredell, Jackson, Lee, Lincoln, Macon, Madison, McDowell, Mecklenburg, Mitchell, Nash, Polk, Rowan, Rutherford, Stanly, Surry, Swain, Transylvania, Union, Watauga, Wilkes, Yadkin and Yancey.
