Flash flooding hits Stanly County, prompting swift water rescue operations
Heavy rainfall triggered flash flooding in Stanly County, leading Albemarle Fire Department’s water rescue teams to respond.
ALBEMARLE, N.C. — Heavy rainfall caused dangerous flash flooding across parts of Stanly County on Thursday, May 29, 2025, prompting an immediate response from the Albemarle Fire Department’s rescue teams.
The storms created hazardous conditions along Highway 52 North, where rising waters threatened drivers and residents.
The Albemarle Fire Department said it mobilized both on-duty crews and off-duty members of their specialized Swift Water Rescue Team to handle multiple flood-related incidents.
Working alongside Stanly County Rescue, AFD deployed two watercraft to assist with rescue operations – a power boat and an inflatable raft. The coordinated response helped ensure public safety during the rapidly developing emergency situation.
“Flash floods develop quickly and can be extremely dangerous,” officials emphasized following Thursday’s events.
No injuries were reported despite the challenging conditions created by the sudden flooding, the department said.
Emergency responders stress that most flash flood tragedies occur when people attempt to drive through floodwaters.
