Fatalities confirmed as Guadalupe River floods Kerr County

A devastating flood swept through neighborhoods along the Guadalupe River in Kerr County early Friday morning, prompting evacuations. Authorities are now reporting fatalities in the catastrophic event.

Heavy rain overnight dumped 5 to 10 inches in parts of the county, pushing the Guadalupe River to rise faster and higher than it has in nearly 40 years. The river’s surge triggered evacuations and road closures for several neighborhoods along the water starting at 6:30 a.m.

At 8:30 a.m., the Kerr County Sheriff’s Office confirmed fatalities in the flood but did not disclose the total number as they work to notify next of kin. They’re continuing to respond to calls and help with rescues in the area alongside state agencies.

“Residents are encouraged to shelter in place and not attempt travel. Those near creeks, streams, and the Guadalupe River should immediately move to higher ground,” the Kerr County Sheriff’s Office wrote in its update. 

At 8:45 a.m., Kerville Mayor Joe Herring Jr. issued a disaster declaration to mobilize local resources and request additional support from state agencies. Officials are monitoring the situation closely and will share updates as soon as they’re available. 

An emergency shelter for residents affected by today’s flooding has been set up at the First United Methodist Church, located at 321 Thompson Drive in Kerrville, according to city officials. 

Additionally, the Kerrville Police Department has established a reunification point for evacuees at the Walmart on Junction Highway.
