68 lives lost in Kerrville floods; officials warn against 'disaster tourism'
KERR COUNTY, Texas — Do not come to Kerrville just to see the damage. You are blocking roads for rescue efforts and potentially putting yourself in danger, said Texas emergency management officials Sunday afternoon.
Texas Division of Emergency Management Chief Nim Kidd warned people against what is called “disaster tourism.”
“We have a lot of people that are traveling in because they want to see firsthand the damage,” Kidd said in a news conference with Texas Gov. Greg Abbott Sunday. “I’m asking you if you’re not from the community and if you’re not involved in our response and rescue and recovery efforts, stay out of the area, stay out of the area because you don’t know the area.”
Kidd described additional flash flooding risks that his team was monitoring on Sunday afternoon. He said he had received reports of a “wall of water” coming down some creeks in the region.
