NC Ferry System assisting Ocracoke evacuation ahead of Hurricane Erin
OCRACOKE, NC (WWAY) — The North Carolina Ferry System is assisting with evacuations from Ocracoke Island in advance of Hurricane Erin.
Ferries to Hatteras, Cedar Island and Swan Quarter will continue to run on full schedules until the evacuation process is complete, officials said.
Hyde County issued a mandatory evacuation order for all visitors that began at 8:00 p.m. on Sunday. A mandatory evacuation order for residents will go into effect at 6 a.m. Tuesday.
Officials warned that N.C. Highway 12 on the north end of Ocracoke is expected to become impassable at times over the next week due to significant ocean overwash. In a worst-case scenario, the highway could remain closed for several days.
Authorities are urging residents and visitors to heed the evacuation orders and prioritize safety.
