CAROLINA BEACH, NC (WWAY NEWS) — Dangerous surf conditions continue across the Cape Fear as Hurricane Erin moves north.

On Wednesday evening, the storm made its closest approach, which brought some minor erosion at northern beaches like Topsail Island.

A spokesperson for Wrightsville Beach says the high tides actually worked in the town’s favor and smoothed out escarpments on the beach.

Further south, Carolina Beach Fire Chief Alan Griffin says impacts were minimal.

“From that part of it, what we saw was just tides made it up to the dune lines, but no major erosion. A little bit of flooding on canal, which is normal with our storm surges, but that was about it,” Griffin said.

Although Hurricane Erin is moving away, red flag conditions remain in place.

Chief Griffin is cautioning everyone to monitor those conditions and stay out of the water.

“Rip currents have been strong all week. We’re expecting them to be strong till at least Friday.”

Chief Griffin says while impacts were minimal, the storm serves as a good reminder to stay prepared.

“Pay attention to your local officials, you know, it never hurts to be prepared. We save for 72 hours for a storm,” he said.
