Raleigh declares April 15 Carolina Hurricanes Day
Raleigh, N.C. — The City of Raleigh, in a nod to the sole professional team in town, has declared April 15 Carolina Hurricanes Day.
The Carolina Hurricanes are back in the NHL postseason after a 10-year drought, having secured a place in the 2019 Stanley Cup Playoffs with a 3-1 win against the New Jersey Devils on April 4.
The Hurricanes, 46-29-7, open the playoffs against the defending Stanley Cup Champions, the Washington Capitals, with two games on the road. Games 3 and 4 of the best-of-seven series will be played at Raleigh’s PNC Arena.
To mark Hurricanes Day, the city is asking residents of the City of Oaks and beyond to Hurricanes colors to work or school to show their love and support for the team.
The Carolina Hurricanes first joined the National Hockey League in 1979 as the Hartford Whalers, but moved to Raleigh in 1997. They are the only North Carolina professional team to win a national championship — a Stanley Cup win over the Edmonton Oilers in 2006.
