Public welcome at fallen deputy's funeral services

HOUSTON (FOX 26) – Today thousands of people from across the city, state and country will pay tribute to Deputy Sandeep Dhaliwal, who was killed on duty on Friday during a routine traffic stop.

The public is welcome at two ceremonies at the Berry Center in Cypress on Wednesday.

A funeral procession will begin at 7:30 a.m. Wednesday.

Following the procession, there will be a Sikh religious ceremony at 10:30 a.m. and a law enforcement ceremony at 11:30 a.m. at the Berry Center.

The public is welcome at both, space permitting. The Berry Center can hold 7,200 people. The Cy-Fair FCU Stadium will serve as overflow seating if that number is exceeded.

Following the ceremonies, at 12:30 p.m., there will be a 21-gun salute.

Sheriff Gonzalez described Dhaliwal, who was the first Sikh deputy for Harris County, as “well-liked and well-respected.”

Dhaliwal was also the Director of Homeland Security for UNITED SIKHS. He led operations for Hurricane Harvey, Hurricane Maria and various other projects to assist the less fortunate and those in need.

He was trailblazer for the Harris County Sheriff’s Office, and was easily recognizable in his faith’s traditional turban and beard.
