CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Severe weather could have a major impact on Halloween trick or treating in Charlotte and across the Carolinas Thursday.

First Warn Chief Meteorologist Brad Panovich says it won’t be a washout Thursday, but the a line of storms will moving through the area will likely bring severe weather to the Queen City.

“The timing could not be worse for trick or treating tomorrow,” Panovich said. “I really think the evening hours will be the main concern. That six or seven o’clock timeframe, I think we could see some severe storms.”

Ahead of the front, we could see a mix of sun and clouds earlier Thursday, Panovich said. The more sun we see, the greater chance for storms later in the day.

All forms of severe weather could be in play: including gusty winds, small hail, and an isolated tornado cannot be ruled out. Currently, Panovich expects the biggest threat to be damaging winds during Thursday’s storms, with the possibility of 30-40 mph straight-line winds.

As of 11 a.m. Wednesday, the entire Charlotte area is under a medium threat for severe storms on Halloween.

Small changes in the speed of the system will greatly affect the timing of the trick or treating forecast.

“Don’t get too wrapped up in the exact timing,” Panovich said. “It’s really hard to pin down the exact timing of these storms, just know they’re going to move through the area at that time.”

In the meantime, get those rain boots ready and the umbrellas and, hopefully, we can get in a few dry hours for the kiddos getting as much candy as possible.
