Port of Corpus Christi awards $10K in hurricane relief to disaster recovery group

The Port of Corpus Christi has awarded $10,000 to the Coastal Bend Disaster Recovery Group, which is working to help those affected by a hurricane that struck the area just days ago.
Effects of the storm still are being calculated, but port officials said in a statement Thursday it is working to identify opportunities to support organizations and entities involved in the recovery effort.
Officials for the nation’s third largest port handed out the donation during a ceremony outside the port’s administration building on Power Street.
The nonprofit group’s efforts have taken on new urgency. Officials for the nation’s third-largest port lauded the nonprofit, which has taken on a vital role in helping residents and businesses affected by Hurricane Hanna a week ago.
Hurricane Hanna was a Category 1 storm that packed 90-mph winds and heavy rains when it rumbled ashore on Padre Island on July 25. The storm’s ferocity left thousands of homes and businesses without electricity, some for several days.
The nonprofit Coastal Bend Disaster Recovery Group, formed in 2015, works with businesses and volunteers to coordinate long-term disaster recovery within the eleven-county region.
In May, the group gave a house to a Portland woman whose previous home was destroyed during Hurricane Harvey in 2017.
That dedication marked the Coastal Bend Disaster Recovery Group’s 100th home dedication.
