Hurricane Delta rapidly strengthening, expected to become major storm Tuesday

Tropical Storm Delta has gained momentum and was officially upgraded to a Category 1 hurricane Monday evening, according to the National Hurricane Center.

Maximum sustained winds produced by Delta have been measured at 75 mph, classifying the storm as a Category 1 hurricane, according to the NHC.

The storm is located 150 miles south southwest of Negril, Jamaica and is forecast to move over the southern Gulf of Mexico Tuesday night or early Wednesday, according to the NHC.

If it makes landfall, Delta would be the 10th named storm to hit the U.S. in a single season, which would be an all-time record. 2020 has already tied 1916 for nine landfalling tropical systems in the U.S., AccuWeather said.

Two major hurricanes have formed this season: Laura and Teddy reached Category 3 or higher on the Saffir-Simpson wind scale.
