Tornado warnings in Mecklenburg, Union counties in NC

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A tornado warning was issued for Mecklenburg County and Union County in North Carolina at 6:50 p.m. Both were set to expire at 7:15 p.m. 

Two tornado warnings issued Sunday for Chester and York counties in South Carolina have both ended.

The two warnings followed each other back-to-back near Lowrys and McConnells in the 5 p.m. hour.

Both warnings were issued when the National Weather Service noticed severe thunderstorms with radar-indicated rotation.

While there was no immediate confirmation of tornados on the ground, images on social media indicated possible wall clouds, a common precursor to a tornado, in the atmosphere.

Scattered storms throughout the Carolinas Sunday have posed a risk for tornados and severe weather.

Additional storms over upstate South Carolina were still moving east towards Charlotte and the I-77 corridor around 6 p.m. First Warn Chief Meterologist Brad Panovich and the First Warn Storm Team will continue to monitor these storms  for any possible warnings.

A Tornado Warning means a tornado is occurring or likely in the next few minutes. Those in the area of the tornado warning should seek shelter inside a sturdy structure immediately. The best shelter is on the ground floor with as many walls between you and the outside as possible.

A possible tornado caused damage in Dillon County, South Carolina Sunday afternoon along Interstate 85.

The National Weather Service will visit Dillon County Monday to investigate the damage first hand.
