Epsilon strengthens into Cat. 1 hurricane; 26th named hurricane of the season

Miami — Epsilon strengthened into a Cat. 1 hurricane on Tuesday night with winds of 75 mph.

The storm is currently about 545 miles southeast of Bermuda.

The National Hurricane Center said the storm is currently movingat 13 mph. The storm is expected to make a slight northwest turn on Thursday.

Epsilon will makes its closet approach to Bermuda on Thursday night.

Additional strengthening of the storm is expected over the next couple days.

Epsilon is unlikely to impact the U.S. apart from a rip current risk at our coast later this week. As it approaches Bermuda, it will bring winds, storm surge and heavy rain to the island.

Epsilon is the 26th named storm of the season. The record is 27 storms in 2005.

There are still several weeks left in the 2020 Atlantic hurricane season, which ends in late November.
