5 things to know about Florence in NC
Florence has produced a lot of news. Here are some things to know Monday:
1. Tornadoes continue to be an elevated risk in our area. Two tornadoes were confirmed in central North Carolina in Wayne and Wilson counties Monday morning.
2. Though flooding continues as a dangerous threat, the Triangle should start to dry out after days of wet weather.
According to WRAL meteorologist Elizabeth Gardner, “Our rainfall potential is really starting to go down. The rain bands will ease up around lunch time, and the rain really eases up on Tuesday.”
3. If hitting the road, know a large portion of Interstate 95, from Johnston County to the South Carolina line, remains closed because of flooding. I-40 from Wilmington to I-95 is also still closed.
4. In New Bern, 30 roads remain impassable, 4,200 homes and more than 300 commercial buildings are damaged, 6,000 customers are without power and 1,200 residents are in shelters.
5. Officials say at least 17 people in the Carolinas have been killed in the storm, including 11 in North Carolina and five in South Carolina.
