Fireworks shows around central North Carolina could be upended by severe weather

WAKE COUNTY, N.C. — As we approach the Fourth of July on Tuesday, a few cities will be starting their festivities Monday night.

While these events are still running on schedule, the potential for severe weather may impact when these events will start, or if they will be canceled.

Monday is a WRAL Weather Alert Day due to dangerously high heat indexes and a level 2 storms risk during the afternoon and evening.

Hour-by-hour rain chances, July 3

A line of storms is expected to form and move through central North Carolina sometime around 5 p.m. and push eastward across the state.

While it looks like the severe weather may end before fireworks begin, which is usually around 9 p.m., families who gather for music, food and fellowship throughout the evening are advised to keep an eye on the sky.

The storms will have the potential to produce heavy rain and hail Monday evening. If you head out to events around 6 p.m., be ready to evacuate if weather gets bad.
