A sole official in Maui is tasked with deciding when to activate warning sirens that sound out on Hawaii’s second-largest island during emergencies. Kristina Lee-Garrido was in a rental unit in Lahaina with her best friend when last week’s wildfires broke out. She joined CBS News to describe the lack of warning they had and the hours she spent riding out the fire in a swimming pool.

“To our ‘ohana on Maui, we see you and love you,” the company wrote.

Gov. Josh Green said the state is working toward a moratorium on real estate sales “to make sure that no one is victimized.”

“I do not” regret not sounding the sirens, Maui Emergency Management Agency Administrator Herman Andaya told CBS News’ Jonathan Vigliotti at a news conference Wednesday in his first public comments since the wildfires broke out.

The storm is expected to bring heavy rainfall to the state after hitting Mexico.

Only nine of the more than 110 confirmed victims of last week’s wildfire in Hawaii have been identified and hundreds more are still missing. Lilia Luciano is in Maui with the latest on recovery efforts.
