At least 55 people are dead after wildfires ripped through Hawaii this week, and hundreds of homes and businesses on the island of Maui have been left in ashes. Alice Lee, chair of the Maui County Council, tells CBS News she lost cellphone and internet service during the disaster.

Hawaii Gov. Josh Green said that it’s likely the largest natural disaster in the state’s history.

The rock legend says the “main priority is the safety of our dear staff and team members.”

The death toll is expected to climb in Hawaii as search and rescue efforts continue following the wildfires that have killed at least 55. CBS News Los Angeles’ Rudabeh Shahbazi has more from Maui on the continued evacuations. And Dr. Art Chasen, trauma surgeon and the director of trauma medical at Maui Health, joined CBS News to discuss the situation at his hospital.

JD Hessemer, a Maui resident and co-owner of Kohola Brewery in Lahaina, said he had to make the difficult decision to evacuate without official guidance due to worsening conditions and a lack of power. He joins “CBS Mornings” to talk about widespread destruction on the island.
