All of British Columbia was placed under a state of emergency Saturday as several wildfires burned across the Canadian province, forcing 30,000 people to evacuate. A large wildfire also forced the evacuation of the city of Yellowknife in Canada’s Northwest Territories. In Washington state, a wildfire has destroyed dozens of structures near Spokane.

Canada has seen a record number of wildfires this year — contributing to choking smoke in parts of the U.S.

The fire began late Tuesday in the north of the island and has forced authorities in eight municipalities to order the evacuation of more than 4,500 people and the confinement of thousands more.

The death toll in Maui has risen to 114. Meanwhile, a resident criticized an official’s decision to not sound emergency sirens as the flames spread. Jonathan Vigliotti has more.
