A wildfire that broke out in Canada’s Northwest Territories has forced the evacuation of about 20,000 people from the city of Yellowknife.

The storm is set to impact the southwestern U.S. with heavy rainfall starting Friday through early next week, “peaking on Sunday and Monday,” according to the National Hurricane Center​.

The Great Galveston Hurricane is known as the deadliest weather disaster in United States history, killing at least 8,000 people, with some estimates as high as 12,000 people.

Nearly 85% of wildfires are started by people, including from campfires, negligently discarded cigarettes and intentional acts of arson, according to the National Park Service.

Maui resident Katheleen Cardenas-Haro was stuck on an overpass with her husband and children while their town burned before them. She joined CBS News to describe her run for safety.

Kristina Lee-Garrido was in a rental unit in Lahaina with her best friend when last week’s wildfires broke out. She joined CBS News to describe the lack of warning they had and the hours she spent riding out the fire in a swimming pool.

“To our ‘ohana on Maui, we see you and love you,” the company wrote.

Gov. Josh Green said the state is working toward a moratorium on real estate sales “to make sure that no one is victimized.”

“I do not” regret not sounding the sirens, Maui Emergency Management Agency Administrator Herman Andaya told CBS News’ Jonathan Vigliotti at a news conference Wednesday in his first public comments since the wildfires broke out.

The storm is expected to bring heavy rainfall to the state after hitting Mexico.

Only nine of the more than 110 confirmed victims of last week’s wildfire in Hawaii have been identified and hundreds more are still missing. Lilia Luciano is in Maui with the latest on recovery efforts.
