The Hawaiian island of Maui is reeling after catastrophic wildfires this week. Meanwhile, Republican presidential candidates are heading to the Iowa state fair to campaign for the GOP nomination. All that and all that matters in today’s Eye Opener.

Many survivors of the deadly wildfires on Hawaii’s Maui island say they had little to no warning as the flames raced toward their homes and businesses. Records show no warning sirens went off, but officials did send alerts to cell phones and television and radio stations. CBS News correspondent Jonathan Vigliotti reports from Maui.

Organizations are working to provide supplies, shelter and medical care to those affected by the deadly fires on Hawaii’s island of Maui. Lauren Wittel, a communications consultant with the Maui Rescue Mission, explains how people can help those in need.

Dozens of people have been killed, and many more remain missing, after the wildfire ripped through the historic city of Lahaina on Hawaii’s Maui island earlier this week. A full scale search-and-rescue operation is underway. Jonathan Vigliotti has the latest.

Hundreds of homes were destroyed by the wildfire which swept through the Maui city of Lahaina. Several thousand residents are staying in emergency shelters across the island. Hawaii Gov. Josh Green estimated that about 80% of the community was destroyed. Rudabeh Shahbazi has more.

At least 55 people are dead after wildfires ripped through Hawaii this week, and hundreds of homes and businesses on the island of Maui have been left in ashes. Alice Lee, chair of the Maui County Council, tells CBS News she lost cellphone and internet service during the disaster.

Hawaii Gov. Josh Green said that it’s likely the largest natural disaster in the state’s history.

The rock legend says the “main priority is the safety of our dear staff and team members.”

The death toll is expected to climb in Hawaii as search and rescue efforts continue following the wildfires that have killed at least 55. CBS News Los Angeles’ Rudabeh Shahbazi has more from Maui on the continued evacuations. And Dr. Art Chasen, trauma surgeon and the director of trauma medical at Maui Health, joined CBS News to discuss the situation at his hospital.
