At least three people including a mother and her young son were left dead by twisters in Louisiana as blizzard-like conditions hit the Great Plains.

Winter storm alerts are posted from the Rocky Mountains to the Great Lakes as the East Coast prepares for a powerful blast of ice and snow. In the South, a rare December outbreak of tornadoes has killed several people in Lousiana as the threat moves into Alabama and Florida. Elise Preston has the latest.

Multiple buildings, including a medical center, suffered significant damage after at least two tornadoes touched down in a Louisiana city.

Tornadoes inflicted major damage in parts of the South as heavy snow sweeps across the Great Plains. CBS News correspondent Elise Preston joins Errol Barnett and Lana Zak from northern Louisiana, where cleanup efforts are underway.

A massive storm system stretching from Canada to the Gulf Coast spawned several tornadoes across the Midwest Tuesday, before unleashing torrents of rain in the southeast. CBS News correspondent Elise Preston is in Shreveport, Louisiana, as the storm approaches.

At least nine tornadoes hit Texas and Oklahoma on Tuesday, causing major damage and bringing down power lines. Elise Preston reports.

Tornadoes in Texas and Oklahoma caused injuries and damage in several areas.

The storm will “produce numerous, widespread, and impactful weather hazards in the heart of the country this week,” the National Weather Service said.

CBS News’ David Begnaud went back to a city in Tennessee to check in on those who lost loved ones in a devastating tornado that killed 19 people in 2020, including a family of three.

“It’s a rare experience, but it’s not unique, and it seems with climate change​ and more intense hurricane seasons, it’s happening more frequently,” one archaeologist said.

Los Angeles and San Francisco international airports are among dozens in California that could see disruptions in as little as 20 to 40 years, researchers said.
