Residents of Jasper County, Mississippi, are recovering after several tornadoes pummeled the area. Severe storms will bring heat and dangerous winds to the South in the coming days. Omar Villafranca reports from Dallas, Texas.

At least one person was killed and more than 20 were injured when a powerful tornado touched down in Louin, Mississippi, overnight. At least 26 tornadoes were reported across 10 states over the weekend, destroying multiple homes. Omar Villafranca reports.

Following a weekend of extreme heat and deadly tornadoes, more severe weather is expected to impact the South. The Weather Channel meteorologist Chris Warren has the forecast.

Forecasters say the storm could strengthen into a hurricane in the coming days.

Intense heat and humidity are suffocating parts of Texas with a heat index above 120 degrees in some areas. The heat comes on the heels of a tornado that killed three people in the Texas panhandle last week. Stephanie Whitfield, a reporter for Houston CBS affiliate KHOU, has more.

Officials estimated that 20 or 30 homes in the area were either significantly damaged or destroyed by a tornado in Jasper County overnight.

Several parts of the U.S. have been hit by severe weather and triple-digit heat. The Weather Channel meteorologist Paul Goodloe has the forecast for the rest of the weekend.

A tornado a quarter-of-a-mile wide ripped through the Texas Panhandle town of Perryton Thursday, leaving three people dead and dozens more injured, officials said. It was part of a severe storm system that also brought flash flooding to the Florida Panhandle. Hundreds of thousands of people remain without power across the South.
