Americans from California to Florida are struggling under scorching heat. And on the West Coast, the extreme weather is fueling wildfires. Jonathan Vigliotti has details from Beaumont, California.

As more people across the country are seeing the impact of wildfires and smoke, scientists are turning to the promise of big data, technology and collaboration to keep big fires from spreading.

The Northeast is once again dealing with a surge in flash flooding impacting states from New Hampshire to Pennsylvania. At least five people are dead and two young children are missing due to weather-related events in Bucks County. Wakisha Bailey with CBS News Philadelphia reports.

Five people were killed amid flash flooding in Pennsylvania as heavy downpours continue in the Northeast. Much of the rest of the country is still dealing with extreme heat. Danya Bacchus reports.

Officials have posted air quality alerts for several states stretching from Ohio to Montana because of smoke blowing in from Canadian wildfires.

Across the northeastern U.S., forecasters warned of potential flash floods and tornadoes on Sunday linked to the latest bout of severe weather.

The Weather Channel meteorologist Paul Goodloe tells “Face the Nation” that this summer’s worldwide extreme weather has both heat and floods, the “two biggest weather killers.”
