Florence victim plans home repairs after $150K win
RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — A North Carolina woman whose home suffered hurricane damage for the second time in two years is planning repairs with her lottery winnings.
North Carolina lottery officials said Shirley Tolson will use the nearly $106,000 she pocketed from a scratch-off prize for repairs after her roof and chimney were damaged by Hurricane Florence in September. The Robeson County home also was damaged by Hurricane Matthew in 2016.
Tolson’s win came Monday when the tax accountant stopped by a pawn shop in Red Springs and bought a $5 scratch-off ticket. Tolson says she rarely plays the lottery but took a chance on an impulse.
She won $150,000, an amount reduced by required state and federal tax withholdings.
