Florence bathed NC in raw sewage. New figures show it was even worse than we thought.

As Hurricane Florence was soaking the state in September, local creeks and rivers were swirling with germs, chemicals, sewage and other filth from sources that are usually stored safely and not a threat to public health. Polluted flood waters swamped coal ash ponds at power plants. Rising waters engulfed private septic systems in back yards. The unwholesome mix inundated hog waste lagoons on farms. And the torrent overwhelmed municipal waste water treatment plants in towns…

In Hurricanes’ Hartford homage, a very un-Whalerslike comeback

In Hurricanes’ Hartford homage, a very un-Whalerslike comeback

Coming into the game 14-15-5 was enough homage to the Forever .500s, as a Boston columnist once (appropriately) dubbed the Hartford Whalers. Going down 2-0 to the Boston Bruins in the first nine minutes was probably taking it too far. The difference between then and now – yes, one of many differences between then and now – is that the Whalers never seemed to come back when that happened. The Carolina Hurricanes, wearing the undead…

Carolina Hurricanes, in Whalers green, fight past Bruins 5-3

The Boston Bruins were on the ice Sunday at PNC Arena, adding to the retro feel of the day and ready to play the Carolina Hurricanes wearing Hartford Whalers…

Spencer Solves It: Family of 5 struggling after Hurricane Harvey decimated home

HOUSTON – Just days before Christmas, Rosy Reyes took Bill Spencer on a tour of her flood-ravaged trailer home in north Houston. A place where it seemed everything is crumbling and falling apart. From the holes in the walls, bigger holes in the ceiling, to the rotting floors that are separating and are literally dangerous to walk on in places. “This is where the rain comes pouring right down on our bed where my husband and (sic) me sleep,” Reyes said….
