5 confirmed tornadoes hit North Texas, damaging dozens of homes

The National Weather Service confirmed that five tornadoes have hit North Texas, and as many as 12 may have occurred on Tuesday, November 13. The weather agency tweeted that it has confirmed the destructive tornadoes based on video and eyewitness reports.

Dozens of homes and businesses were damaged by a line of thunderstorms, according to the Associated Press. Several people were injured in the suburbs and counties stretching north of the Dallas-Fort Worth area. More than 1,000 flights into and out of area airports were delayed and over 100 were canceled on Tuesday, according to the tracking service FlightAware.

Where did the tornadoes hit?

Three of the tornadoes touched down in Tarrant County, one in Wise County, and the other west of Paris, according to the NWS. The tornado in Wise County was an EF-2 producing winds up to 125 miles per hour. The National Weather Service said they all came from the same parent storm.

In Louisiana, two fatalities were reported after a dangerous tornado near Four Forks. According to the Caddo Parish Sheriff’s Office, a young boy was found deceased in a wooded area of Pecan Farms, a town north of Four Forks, after his home was destroyed by the twister.

Just after 2 a.m. local time, first responders discovered the body of the boy’s mother under debris located about one street over from where her home was destroyed, according to the New York Times.

Injuries in Texas

In Decatur, the New York Times reported that one person was injured by flying debris and treated at the scene. Another person was taken to a hospital after high winds overturned an 18-wheeler truck, according to a statement from the emergency management office in Wise County.

In the Dallas suburb of Grapevine, police spokesperson Amanda McNew reported five confirmed injuries on Tuesday. Additionally in Grapevine, damage from the storm caused some businesses to close on Tuesday and forced some elementary schools in the area to close early.

The storms were part of a larger weather system that has brought significant, widespread hazards across more than a dozen states in the central United States. Parts of the Plains and Upper Midwest saw heavy snow, sleet and ice, and blizzard conditions affecting multiple states.
